I’m Dr. Shyamala Kiru, founder and Clinic Director of Kiru Psychotherapy Clinic in Newmarket, Ontario. I hold a doctorate in Couple and Family Therapy, and for over two decades I worked with clients as a Registered Psychotherapist and Registered Marriage and Family Therapist (now retired).
I founded the clinic in 2011 after seeing the same gap play out again and again: therapy that left clients feeling heard but without anything they could actually use once they walked out the door. I built Kiru to be different. Accessible across Ontario with flexible hours and no long waitlists, practical enough that clients leave with tools they can use right away, and grounded in evidence-based approaches like Emotionally Focused Therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, and Family Systems Theory.
I’m now retired from clinical practice, but I lead our team with the same standards that shaped my own twenty years in the room with clients. Every person who works with us, in Newmarket or virtually across Ontario, is supported by a CRPO-regulated psychotherapist trained in evidence-based care and working toward the same goal: real, lasting change. Beyond the clinic, I’m a frequent media contributor on relationships and mental health, having appeared on CP24 and CTV News, and I’m passionate about making therapy less intimidating and more within reach.
