Kiru Psychotherapy Clinic

"The door's closed again."

You knocked. You got “I’m fine, leave me alone.” You know they’re not fine. The friend plans got cancelled, again. The small ask about dishes turned into a slammed door, and you’ve started rehearsing sentences before you say them in your own kitchen. Then you’re lying awake, replaying every parenting decision since kindergarten and wondering if the damage is already done.

We know:

Anger is the easy emotion. Anxiety is the one underneath.

Behind the attitude, the silence, and the shut door is usually a teen who’s overwhelmed and doesn’t have the words, or the safety, to say so. Every time the fear wins, the door closes a little tighter, and the distance between you grows.

Therapy for teen anxiety gives them the tools to handle pressure, and gives you the tools to rebuild the connection.

"I'm fine" isn't a plan. This is.

How Therapy for Teen Anxiety Can Help

Anxiety in a teenager is a master of disguise. It shows up as attitude, as cancelled plans, as a phone that never leaves their hand, or as a short fuse that wasn’t there last year. From the hallway, it looks like a teen being difficult. But inside, it’s a nervous system running at full alarm with no off switch.

In therapy for teens at Kiru Psychotherapy Clinic, we use Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), the most well-researched treatment for anxiety, adapted for ages 13 to 19. Teens can see their own thinking in a way younger kids can’t, so we go straight to it. We help them find the thought patterns driving the worry, test them against reality, and build tools that work at school, with friends, and on the way to university.

And then there’s you. Parenting an anxious teen has its own cost: the fear, the exhaustion, the second-guessing at 1 AM. So parent coaching comes standard. We help you understand what’s beneath the anger and the silence, and how to respond in ways that draw your teen closer rather than pushing them further away.

The quality of our lives is determined by the quality of our relationships, including the one with our teenager.

What your teen might be thinking:

“Everyone else has it together. Why can’t I?”

“If I don’t go, I can’t mess it up.”

“I’m fine, just leave me alone.”
Translation: I don’t know how to ask.)

What you might be thinking:

“I don’t even know who my teenager is anymore.”

“I replay every mistake I’ve made as a parent, and I’m convinced it’s my fault.”

“What if I’ve already lost them, and it’s too late?”

We hear you, and we hear them. Let’s get to work.

What Anxiety Therapy for Teens Helps With

Fear of judgement, the comparison spiral on social media, and the exhaustion of trying to fit in. We help your teen show up as themself, and survive the group chat.

Worry about school, the future, friendships, and everything in between, on a loop. We teach your teen to catch the spiral early and shut it down.

Grades, tryouts, auditions, and the pressure to get into the right program. We help your teen aim high without falling apart at the first B.

Racing heart, tight chest, and the fear that something is seriously wrong. We teach your teen what’s happening in their body and how to bring it back down.

Attendance battles, test anxiety, and burnout by October. We build a plan to get your teen back in the building and keep them there.

Constant worry about their body, an illness, or a symptom nobody can find. We help your teen stop scanning and start living.

The short fuse that showed up out of nowhere. It’s usually anxiety wearing a disguise, and we help your teen take it off.

Up until 3 AM, asleep until noon, or lying awake with a racing mind. We help your teen reset the schedule and calm the brain that won’t shut off.

Vaping, alcohol, gaming until dawn, or other habits that numb the anxiety instead of dealing with it. We help your teen face what they’ve been avoiding, without shame.

Walking on eggshells, arguments about nothing, and a house that feels like a standoff. We coach you so the tension drops and the talking starts again.

What every plan shares:

CBT is the most well-researched treatment for anxiety, and teens are ready for the real thing. We help them spot the thought patterns driving the worry, test them against reality, and build tools that hold up under pressure, from exam week to the first month away from home.

Teens won’t open up to another adult trying to fix them. So we don’t lead with fixing. We lead with listening, honesty, and zero lectures, because the relationship in the room is what makes the tools stick.

Anxiety shrinks when teens face what scares them in planned, manageable steps. We build the plan with your teen, and they take it into the classroom, the party, and the campus tour.

Parent support and coaching, so you understand what’s beneath the anger, the silence, or the shut door, and can respond in ways that rebuild connection. You get help with your own fear and exhaustion, too. You do the work. Your teen feels the shift.

Clear goals from session one, honest progress checks along the way, and a teen therapist who’ll tell you when you’re done. We’re not trying to keep your teen here forever.

How We Treat Teen Anxiety

We tailor every plan to your child’s age, temperament, and what’s already been tried.

Anxiety doesn't get the last word.

Your teen does. We just help them find it.

Our Approach

How Our Therapy for Teen Anxiety Works

Step 1: Earn Trust

Before any tools, we get to know your teen as a whole person, what they care about, what they're afraid of, and what's already been tried. Teens don't open up to someone with an agenda, so we don't bring one.

Step 2: Build Tools

We work directly with your teen using CBT strategies built for how they think, practical skills they can use when the pressure hits, at school, with friends, or heading into the independence of university.

Step 3: Reopen the Door

We coach you alongside your teen's sessions, so you understand what's beneath the anger and the silence, and know how to respond in ways that rebuild connection and support the work instead of adding distance.

Therapy for Teen Anxiety FAQs

Often both, and anger is the easier emotion to show. Anxiety in teens rarely looks like worry. It looks like attitude, slammed doors, and shutting you out. Underneath is usually a teen who feels overwhelmed and doesn’t have the words, or the safety, to say so. If the attitude spikes around school, social plans, or anything unfamiliar, and it comes with withdrawal or trouble sleeping, there’s more going on than a phase. Book a free consult, and we’ll help you sort out which is which.

That’s one of the most common reasons parents call us. Teens often find it easier to open up to someone outside the family, someone who isn’t attached to the outcome the way a parent understandably is. In session, your teen doesn’t have to worry about disappointing you or getting a reaction, which makes room for the honesty that’s been missing at home. And through parent coaching, we help you understand what’s going on for your teen even while they’re still not talking to you directly, so you’re not left in the dark.

It doesn’t mean you’re stuck. Forcing the issue with teens usually backfires, so we don’t. We often start with parent coaching, helping you understand what’s driving the resistance and how to bring up therapy in a way that doesn’t sound like a punishment or an accusation. Many teens come around once they see it’s not what they expected. Even before that, you’ll have tools to ease the tension at home. Not sure where to begin? Parent support and coaching are built for this.

Not word for word, and that’s on purpose. Teens open up when they trust the room is theirs. What we’ll always do is keep you in the loop on progress, coach you on how to support the work at home, and tell you right away if there’s ever a safety concern. We’ll walk you through how this works on your free consult, so nobody’s surprised.

Yes, and it’s one of the most important times to keep the support going. New city, new friends, new academic pressure, and nobody checking if they’ve eaten. That’s when anxiety tends to resurface. Because we offer online therapy for teens with anxiety, your teen can continue their sessions from residence, so the progress they’ve built doesn’t restart just because their address did. Teen therapy for anxiety about college or university works best when it starts before the move, so reach out early.

Not necessarily. We’re Registered Psychotherapists, not physicians, so prescribing isn’t something we do. What we do is teach skills, through CBT and parent coaching, that many teens use to make real progress without medication. If we ever thought medication was worth a conversation alongside therapy, you’d hear it from us directly, and we’d help you think it through with your teen’s doctor.

Our core approach is Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, and the body is part of that work. Teens with anxiety feel it physically first: the racing heart, the tight chest, the stomach that drops, so we teach them what their body is doing and how to bring it back down in the moment.

If you’ve been searching for somatic therapy for teens with attachment anxiety, the attachment piece is where our parent coaching does the heavy lifting, rebuilding the connection at home that helps a teen’s nervous system settle. We’re not a somatic therapy practice, and we’ll tell you if we think that’s what your teen needs instead.

Both. Anxiety doesn’t check for gender, but it often dresses differently. Therapy for teen girls with anxiety frequently means untangling social comparison, perfectionism, and the pressure to hold it together for everyone. With boys, it more often hides behind anger, gaming, or going silent. Every therapist on our team works with both, and we match your teen with the person they’ll be most likely to talk to.

Long enough to work, and no longer. Most teens and their parents notice a real shift within eight to twelve sessions, which lines up with what the research says about CBT for anxiety. Part of that speed comes from coaching you at the same time, so the progress has somewhere to land at home. We set the goals early and check them often, and you’ll always know where you are in the plan.

Both, and teens are often the ones who pick online. Online therapy for teens with anxiety works particularly well for this age group, since plenty of teens are more honest from their own bedroom than from an office. In person at 75 Main St S in Newmarket is here when you’d rather have a room and a door. Some families mix the two, and we’ll help you figure out which fits on your free consult. If your child is under 13, our Therapy for Child Anxiety page is the better fit.
