Leading Ontario’s Psychotherapy Team with Over 20 Years of Clinical Experience

Welcome — I’m so glad you’re here.

Meet Shyamala Kiru — Founder & Clinic Director

I’m Dr. Shyamala Kiru, DMin, founder and Clinic Director of Kiru Psychotherapy Clinic in Newmarket, Ontario. I hold a doctorate in Couple and Family Therapy, and while I am now retired, for over two decades, I served clients as both a Registered Psychotherapist and Registered Marriage and Family Therapist.

Since founding the clinic in 2011, my mission has remained the same: to make therapy practical, deeply transformative, and accessible to anyone in Ontario who’s ready for meaningful change.

Although I’m now retired from clinical practice, I bring the full depth of my therapeutic background to the way I lead our team. My focus is on ensuring that every client who walks through our doors — whether in person or virtually — receives care that is compassionate, clinically sound, and results-oriented.

Whether you connect with us in Newmarket or online across Ontario, you’ll be supported by CRPO-regulated psychotherapists trained in evidence-based approaches and unified by a shared vision of creating real change in the lives of the people we serve.

Why I Founded Kiru Psychotherapy Clinic

When I began my career as a therapist, I quickly saw a gap in the way mental health care was delivered. Too often, therapy felt like a long, open-ended process without clear results. Clients would leave sessions feeling heard, but without tools they could apply right away.

I wanted to change that.

In 2011, I founded Kiru Psychotherapy Clinic as a space where therapy is

  • Accessible — Available virtually to anyone in Ontario, with flexible hours and no long waitlists.
  • Practical — Focused on strategies you can use immediately in your real life.
  • Evidence-Based — Rooted in proven modalities like Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), and EMDR.

My Leadership Philosophy

I believe therapy should be a partnership — a space where clients feel safe, supported, and equipped to create the life they want. My role now is to lead our team of licensed psychotherapists with the same values that shaped my own clinical work:

  • Confidence — Helping clients trust themselves to navigate challenges
  • Connection — Fostering healthier relationships at home and beyond
  • Resilience — Building the ability to move through life’s hard seasons without losing yourself

Beyond the Clinic

In addition to leading Kiru Psychotherapy Clinic, I am a frequent media contributor on relationships and mental health, appearing on CP24, CTV News, and other outlets. I’m passionate about destigmatizing therapy, sharing tools for emotional intelligence, and supporting both clients and practitioners in creating meaningful change.
